Unknown Island

The Unknown Island project was conceived as an abstraction of a boat made out of simple steel poles and cork blocks creating a pavilion to represent Portuguese Architecture in different international Art contexts.

Firstly proposed for Praca do Comercio for the Lisbon Triennale 2013 through the Jose Saramago’s tale of the Unknown Island, the pavilion evolved into the representation of the Portuguese architecture for the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Rem Koolhaas’ brief for a 100 years retrospective of national architectures brought a great opportunity for the boat pavilion to navigate the waters of a century of Portuguese architecture.

After the Biennale in Venice, the pavilion was presented as a piece of memory and innovation as an installation for the seaside walk of Belem, Lisbon.
